July 7th, Cutting Fruit

James Torgerson / V Mag at UVA

It’s 4pm, raining and gray outside–

After laying skin-to-skin with my quilt

I decide to cut an overripe honeydew melon.

I use a dull knife

And create small pieces

And I miss the nonexistent baby boy that I breastfed in my dream last night.

Cutting fruit

Is always an exercise

That makes my womb ache.
